Our Behavioral and Health Supports
include psychological supports, behavioral treatment, family
counseling, nursing supports and human sexuality education
and supports. The department’s mission is to support
individuals and their caregivers as behavioral and related
mental health concerns arise at home, at work or in the community,
so that optimal personal growth, development and quality of
life can be realized and achieved.
Psychological Supports
A wide range of psychological services can assist individuals
and their families to overcome challenges that interfere with
a person’s ability to maximize personal growth and development
and achieve the highest quality of life possible. Services
are provided at home, at work or in the community. The psychological
support team, which is composed of a variety of staff who have
training and experience working with individuals with MR/DD,
includes psychologists, psychology assistants, school psychologists
and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors.
Team members are flexible in how and where they deliver services
and emphasize rapid response. With a long history of clinical
service to individuals with MR/DD, they provide seamless services
to all ages and all levels of disability from those with minimal
support needs to those with the most intensive needs.

Behavioral Treatment
Behavioral treatment is a process that typically includes
analysis of behaviors, training caregivers, plan development
and implementation of behavioral interventions.
Behavioral treatment works for a number of reasons. Our team
can help modify the environment so optimal learning can take
place. This concept is better known as person-environment fit.
We help to modify the behaviors of the individual, the staff
and the caregivers to avoid or break down those barriers that
limit growth and potential. Finally, we help to increase the
knowledge and skills of caregivers so that they are empowered
to provide behavior supports in everyday life.
Our staff have high levels of experience and education, including
staff who are trained in Applied Behavior Analysis, psychologists,
psychology assistants, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors,
family counselors, behavior support professionals and Physical
Crisis Intervention trainers.

Family Counseling
Family counseling and consultation assist
family members and/or caregivers with the challenging issues
surrounding living and caring for an individual with MR/DD.
The primary purpose is to support positive change that the
family has identified. Family counseling is a process that
includes assessment, intervention and caregiver support to
help with problem-solving, coping strategies, stress, anger,
loss/grief, trauma, family conflict, life transitions, education
and professional consultation.
Family counseling is unique. Our family counselors take into
consideration the caregiver’s behaviors, emotions and
thoughts as they impact the relationship with the individual
with MR/DD. They provide flexible supports to family members
and caregivers and can provide counseling and consultation
in a variety of settings.
All are master’s degree level, licensed counselors or
social workers, who have extensive experience in the field
of MR/DD. They function as part of a team that allows access
to a wide variety of resources.
Family counselors serve any individuals involved in the care
and support of an individual with MR/DD, including parents
and siblings, immediate and extended family, non-biological
caregivers or any combination of individuals or groups.

Nursing Supports
Our nursing staff offer supports to enable individuals with
MR/DD and medical needs to live, learn, work and play in the
community by working with individuals, families/guardians/caregivers
and other community agencies supporting them.
Our nursing supports are individualized and consist of analysis
of medical needs through assessment, consultation and plan
development; training of individuals, families and caregivers
to meet medical needs, promote and maintain health, identify
risks to health and safety and take actions in the event of
a health care problem; implementation by short-term direct
nursing services, training and delegated nursing; and evaluation
of services/supports provided.
Our highly qualified staff of registered nurses and licensed
practical nurses have long-term experience in meeting the medical/nursing
needs of individuals with MR/DD. They employ a holistic approach
that considers the physical, mental, psychosocial, emotional
and spiritual needs of individuals when meeting medical needs.
