The justice system
can be confusing for anyone, but especially so for someone
who has MR/DD. The Board of MR/DD, in collaboration with the
Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, Common Pleas Court and
a host of
other individuals
and agencies, has produced a two-part training set for people
with MR/DD.
The kit includes two videos and training manuals. The
Right Choice is designed to help individuals with MR/DD develop the
skills to avoid becoming involved with crime. The
Keys to Competency is designed to help restore offenders who have MR/DD to competency.
Among the "stars" of the videos in the new training
kit for offenders with MR/DD are Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs
Jones (formerly Cuyahoga County Prosecutor), Common Pleas Judge
Burt Griffin and Cleveland Director of Public Safety James
Draper (formerly Chief Public Defender in Cuyahoga County),
all of whom played themselves, and a number of corrections
officers and court personnel who took on various roles.
